HORT 453 | Fall 2022

Special Events Design and Production

Taught by Mr. William McKinley, HORT 454 thoroughly covered topics of event planning, management, and design. Coursework included client and vendor communication practices, analysis of social and economic influences, and rental item pricing. Labwork included order delivery, installation and retrieval, impact of collaborative learning, and designs for a variety of occasions.

A copy of my final portfolio can be found under the 'Educational Portfolio' tab.

HORT 451 | Spring 2023

Retail Floristry

HORT 451 allowed me to apply my traditional skills into the retail space. Mr. William McKinley thoroughly discussed best practices to start, run, and maintain a successful business. In addition to the usual arrangements, projects included composing a business plan, designing a store-front, and designing marketing materials. Lecture material included profit analysis, customer experience, employee relations, and production costs. Laboratory work included sympathy & funeral work, personal flowers, and special occasions.

This business is a direct result of this course.

HORT 431 | Fall 2022

Nursery Production and Management

This course, taught by Dr. Andrew King, extensively covered good business and management practices, financing, niche-marketing, and stocking, supplying, and shipping nursery products. Through lab work and tours of a variety of local businesses, I gained experience with field and container crop cycles.

HORT 326 | Fall 2022

Plant Propagation

Plant propagation extensively covered best practices and methods to propagate horticultural crops. Dr. Navreet Mahal did an incredible job of both explaining the science and methodology behind each method as well as the execution of each method. Course and lab work included, but was not limited to: seed propagation, rooting and propagation of cuttings, budding and grafting, layering and propagation via complex structures, micropropagation and tissue culture. Through lab work, I also gained further greenhouse experience and expanded my sanitation, management, and organizational skills.

An example of my Southern Nursery Association-style final paper is included in the 'Educational Portfolio' tab.
